A new film is raising concerns for Vagina Dentata sufferers. Teeth (released in UK cinemas on June 20th) chronicles the life of Dawn, a teenager who discovers she has a toothed vagina.
The film has earnt positive reactions from both critical and consumer audiences, the release has roused uncertainty and disgust for Vagina Dentata sufferers.
In one of the film’s key scenes, a gynaecologist undertakes an examination of the lead character’s vagina, which leads to the practitioner’s hand being viciously mauled by Dawn’s vaginal teeth. However, Dr John Thinnes, consultant gynaecologist at St Augustin’s Hospital London, is eager to stress the exaggeration of such an examination: “While examination of Vagina Dentata can have potential consequences for the gynaecologist, it is no more dangerous than any other gynaecological or invasive procedure. The event detailed in the film exaggerates this immensely, and should not put off any sufferers of Vagina Dentata from visiting their gynaecologist”.
While there are concerns for the humility and reputation of Vagina Dentata sufferers, a spokes person for the film argued that Teeth may encourage those with toothed vaginas to confront their fears and visit their practitioner: "The film balances sensitivity towards the subject of Vagina Dentata, whilst creating a film that is engaging and entertaining for the audience. We hope that the film will therefore give sufferers of Vagina Dentata the confidence to seek advice from dental or gynaecological experts".
Although the film is not released until June 20th, it is already feared that a backlash on Vagina Dentata is inevitable.
